Black Spark has been a five year long experiment of mutual aid, trust and community initiative.
In December 2025, Black Spark will close its doors for the last time.
We invite you to participate in collective reflections before we move into a fallow season.
Black Spark: The Retrospective is on display now and will run until our closing part on December 20th. We have curated a series of events as a part of the Retrospective exhibition, in celebration and contemplation:
Saturday December 6th, 1.30-5pm. Forming Collective Memory: A loosely-facilitated time to participate in and add to the Retrospective exhibition, by writing letters and making art for the space.
Thursday December 11th, 6pm. Holding Up the Mirror: A reflective open discussion on community spaces: what have we learned from the existence of these spaces in Naarm over the past 5 years and beyond?
Saturday December 20th, 1pm ‘til late. Rest In Party: Two renegade stages of live music spanning everything from the blues & folk to hard D’n’B & grindcore. This is the closer folks. We’ll see you in the sonic maelstrom.
Black Spark was never meant to last forever, and so, at the end of 2025, we close the doors for the last time… We hope you will join us for collective celebrations and reflections in our final weeks.
In love, rage, trust & solidarity,
The Black Spark Crew.
Black Spark exists to facilitate…
Creativity in visual arts and music.
Learning through contemplation and deep listening.
Liberation through cultures of resistance and conscious praxis.
Black Spark hosts gatherings of every kind….
…from workshops to exhibitions, peer support groups to lecture series, potluck dinners to organising resistance movements.
This welcoming and supportive space is funded entirely by community donations.
No one turned away for lack of money.
